Our Story

The story of Armor 321 began in 2021. At that time, we (Taylor and Sarah) were leading an online, in-home fitness group. A friend, and former NCAA college wheelchair basketball player, reached out and asked to join our group. Unfortunately, the virtual fitness platform we were using did not provide any programs or workouts for seated athletes, however, we did not want that to be a barrier to joining! With Taylor’s skillset as a Physical Therapist, he modified a variety of workouts which required streaming from multiple platforms to piece together one full routine.

Ultimately, it did not take long to realize that this route was inefficient, ineffective, and cumbersome which still resulted in barriers to building momentum and seeing results. It was at that point that we began our discussion about development of the Armor 321 App in order to provide accessible, adaptive, inclusive, and evidence-based fitness options for seated athletes whether at home or in the gym!

We also realize that training at home or in the gym can be a lonesome process and easy to abandon. Because of that, we wanted to maximize community and accountability, so we created Armor 321 for both seated athletes and standing partners as side-by-side options. This allows for all family, friends, and coworkers to join in the journey and help build habits and routines together that can withstand the test of time. So, grab a friend, invest in your health and well-being, and enjoy the results!

Meet the Team

Introducing the seated athletes featured in our fitness programs.

Jesus Villa

Hey everyone! My name is Jesus Villa, but most people call me Zeus. I was born in the Dominican Republic without both tibiae. When I was two years old, I came to Michigan, where I underwent bilateral amputations, started school, and eventually discovered adaptive sports.

My greatest passion is wheelchair basketball, but I’ve also competed in sled hockey, wrestling, wheelchair football, and tennis, along with trying many other adaptive sports. I thrive on setting new goals, challenging myself, and pushing my body to its limits. My athletic motivation comes from my curiosity to discover where those limits are and how far I can go. I truly believe I can achieve anything I set my mind to, and I hope to inspire others with disabilities to believe the same.

When I’m not training or competing, I work in the ABA field, travel with my wife and our dog, and enjoy video games and music.

Alwyn Uys

Alwyn Uys grew up on the East Coast of South Africa with a deep passion for sport, pursuing his dream of a professional rugby career from a young age. By 21, he was well on track before a diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis led to a life-altering operation that threatened to end his athletic journey.

Determined to go out on his own terms, Alwyn returned to the rugby field one final time—only to suffer a devastating injury, tearing his shoulder, bicep, and pectoral muscles off the bone, bringing his rugby career to an abrupt end.

Just a few years later, at age 24, his life changed again when a near-fatal car accident left him paralyzed from the chest down. Facing immense physical and mental challenges, including depression and anxiety, Alwyn refused to accept the limits placed on him.

Seven years later, he redefined what was possible. Alwyn became the first paraplegic in South Africa to complete a full-distance Ironman in a wheelchair and the first paraplegic in the world to successfully swim the 8km stretch from Robben Island to Blouberg Beach.

Today, Alwyn is an ultra-endurance athlete known for pushing the boundaries of human performance and resilience. His journey is a testament to discipline, mental toughness, and the relentless pursuit of excellence—no matter the odds.

Derek Klinker

Hello, I’m Derek Klinkner, a former wheelchair basketball coach with a deep love for the game and a passion for mentoring student-athletes. In 2012, I embarked on my coaching journey, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Despite facing a T12/L1 spinal cord injury, I embraced coaching as a way to inspire others and stay connected to the competitive world of sports.

Additionally, I am a proud husband to my wife Audra, whom I married in 2015, and a father to our five children. Their love and support are the foundation of my life, and I am grateful for their unwavering encouragement as I pursue my dreams.

Emmanuel Fuentes Cervantes

My name is Emmanuel Fuentes Cervantes. I was born in Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico. I am a former member of the wheelchair basketball team at Southwest Minnesota State University. I have practiced multiple sports such as gymnastics, diving, soccer, and wheelchair basketball.

Playing basketball, I’ve gotten second place representing Mexico in the Parapan-American games 2017 u 21, and first place in the Center-American games in 2018. Representing my state in Mexico, we won first place for three years in a row: 2021, 2022, and 2023.

Genaro Perez

My name is Genaro Perez. I am a graduate of SMSU with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education with Recreational emphasis and Spanish. I was a part of the SMSU wheelchair basketball team all five years at SMSU. I was born with spina bifida and at the age of three I was diagnosed with arthritis. One of my dreams is to coach a wheelchair basketball team.
